1. Use the right paper for your printer

Cheap, low-quality paper sheds more fibers and dust than premium paper, and that dust builds up inside the printer over time, affecting rollers and print quality. It doesn't need to be expensive paper — just paper rated for your printer type (inkjet vs. laser) and in good condition, without curling or moisture damage.

2. Don't let the printer sit unused for long stretches

Inkjet printers especially can suffer from dried, clogged print heads if they go weeks without printing anything. If a printer is going to sit idle, running a quick test page every so often keeps the ink flowing and prevents clogs that are far more annoying to fix later.

3. Keep it clean — inside and out

A simple wipe-down with a dry, lint-free cloth (unplugged, obviously) every few months, plus keeping the area around the printer free of dust, goes a long way toward preventing jams.

Checking for updates a couple of times a year — usually through the manufacturer's website or the printer's own settings menu — is a five-minute task that can prevent a lot of frustration.

5. Store spare toner properly

If you buy toner in bulk to save money (smart move), store the extra cartridges somewhere cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight, and keep them in their original packaging until you're ready to use them. Toner exposed to heat or humidity for long periods can clump or degrade, leading to poor print quality even in a brand-new cartridge.
